"All great celebrations break away from the mundane.”

Dear Renée,
I came to know the joy of celebration when participating in a coaching business development program.

Time was taken each meeting to celebrate our accomplishments for the week. We even went so far as to celebrate our failures too! By doing so, our failures became sources of lessons and opportunities to do it better. It also celebrated that we got out of our comfort zones and took action! Taking it a step further, we also planned how we were going to celebrate next week’s successes to give us motivation to continue taking action.

I use this celebration plan when working with my clients to achieve their goals because I know it works (see Awesome Resource below). However, more often than not, they struggle to come up with a celebration plan. Some do not believe their efforts are worthy of celebration, as they do not see them as extraordinary.

I agree with Abraham Joshua Heschel when he said,

“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state--it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle.... Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.”

I find by celebrating even little achievements, failures or even the fact that we keep showing up sends a signal that we are grateful and life is more about the journey – not the end destination. So, celebrate often, at least once a day.  Create a celebration plan so you have ideas at hand when it’s time to celebrate.

Life can easily be full of happiness and joy when we create our own celebrations!

Don’t Miss a Step: Take Time to Celebrate!

The path of a goal, whether a goal set for your personal life or in the course of your business, is generally seen as having 5 steps: 1) Determine your why and core values; 2) set goals for what you want to achieve linked to your why and core values; 3) create an action plan; 4) implement the action plan by taking steps to achieve the goals; and 5) achieve the goals (completion).

After Step 5, many people return to Step 1 with the question: “OK, what’s next?” And then it’s on to Step 2, 3, 4 and 5 again. It’s what achievers do, right?

But wait, there’s more!

There is actually a very important sixth step that many of us leave out – even I’m guilty of this at times.

Step 6 is where we celebrate our achievements! 🎉

After working hard to reach our goals, taking time to celebrate gives us the opportunity to:

Capture the learning. When we take stock of what we’ve learned along the way to our goals, we can consciously incorporate those lessons in the future. Remember, even “failures” can be celebrated if we learned something from them! When building a business, everything is market research.

Acknowledge our internal resources. In achieving goals, we bring forth various internal resources, such as courage and persistence, to meet the challenges. To have others acknowledge us—and to give ourselves credit, as well—is deeply satisfying. Too often, we miss seeing these qualities in ourselves and others. Acknowledging our strengths has the power to call us forth to use them even more.

Build a sense of unity. If you are working with a team, note that nothing can bond people more than striving toward a common goal and then sharing in the joy of the achievement. However, if you don’t stop to appreciate the people who helped make it happen, connection and goodwill can break down. Your team will feel more inclined to go the extra mile if you give them the appreciation they deserve.

Send a message to the Universe. Stopping to savor and celebrate your successes sends the message out into the Universe that you know how to appreciate this success and that you are ready for more!

Have fun! Knowing you get to celebrate in a fun way after your goal is achieved is a great motivator.  Include how you will celebrate in your Action Plan for your goal.  You’ve done a fantastic job—of course you want to be rewarded with some fun and enjoyment. You deserve it!  This also adds more motivation to continue on the journey.

There are countless ways to celebrate and savor your successes. Don’t wait to only celebrate the big things; celebrate the little things too with little celebrations. Whatever brings you a sense of joyous completion is the ticket. Be as creative as you can! Have fun! Feel joy and happiness!

🥳 Think of ten ways you can celebrate the tiny things, the small things, the big things and the HUGE things in your life.

  • Be as silly and fun as you can be and remember celebrations don’t necessarily cost money.
  • Use the free gift below to help you brainstorm.
  • Try to ensure the celebration supports the long-term goal; i.e. don’t celebrate releasing excess weight by eating a banana split! Instead, perhaps buy a new pair of funky walking/running socks.

Celebration Plan

Here is a template I share with my clients for them to create a Celebration Plan.

The key is to come up with as many ideas as possible so you don’t have to think too hard when it’s time to plan your celebration as part of your goal setting steps. If you have to think too hard, the celebration will likely not take place.
